September 11th National Memorial Trail

My wife and I visited the Shanksville, Pennsylvania, Flight 93 memorial in September 2021. It had been a long time coming, but we finally made the trip, and after having done so, I’m of the opinion that it is one that everyone should make. Although our trip was almost exactly 20 years after that horrible day, as we read the transmissions that had been passed during the highjacking and viewed the remnants of artifacts that had been gathered for preservation, memories of that day came flooding back. And being in the presence of these tangible reminders of what transpired on that particular flight, we could only marvel and thank God for the passengers He had put on the flight and the courageous acts they had taken to prevent what would have been an unprecedented catastrophe for our country.

During our visit there, I came across some information concerning a bicycling route that has been established connecting the three 9/11 memorials: Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pa., the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., and the Twin Towers in New York City. I have yet to tackle this ride, but it is definitely on my radar. It will be a challenging ride for sure, given the terrain and the traffic.

Here is a map of the route taken off the internet. I am also attaching a file that contains a speech concerning the passing of legislation to designate the 9/11 National Memorial Trail as a national touring route here.

The September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance is more than 1,000 miles long and links together the three sites involved in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Click here for a more detailed map of the route. (Courtesy 911trail.org | For lehighvalleylive.com)
