Although I have read some Lermontov, for example, Hero of our Time and Caucasus Captive, I was not aware of this poem of his, the first line of which was applied to an article that I was reading. Since Lermontov’s writings are among the best of the 19th-century Russian Romanticism literary movement, I have decided to do a translation of the poem as well as the short analysis that followed the recitation. I have included the audio file I used.

I was surprised to find that the poem has been set to music and enjoys wide popularity in Russia. I have therefore also attached a representative music audio file for your listening pleasure.

Выхожу один я на дорогу

Сквозь туман кремнистый путь блестит;

Ночь тиха. Пустыня внемлет Богу,

И звезда с звездою говорит.

Alone I go out on the road

Through the fog shines the flinty path;

The night is silent. The desert listens to God,

And star speaks with star.

В небесах торжественно и чудно!

Спит земля в сияньи голубом…

Что же мне так больно и так трудно?

Жду ль чего? Жалею ли о чём?

In the heavens, solemnity and wonder!

The earth sleeps in shining blue…

What is so painful and difficult for me?

Is there something I’m waiting for? Is there something I regret?

Уж не жду от жизни ничего я,

И не жаль мне прошлого ничуть;

Я ищу свободы и покоя!

Я б хотел забыться и заснуть!

Indeed, from life I expect nothing,

And not at all do I regret the past;

Freedom and peace I seek!

I would like to doze off and fall asleep!

Но не тем холодным сном могилы…

Я б желал навеки так заснуть,

Чтоб в груди дремали жизни силы,

Чтоб дыша вздымалась тихо грудь;

But not with that cold sleep of the grave…

I would wish forever to fall asleep thus,

So that in the breast the powers of life were dormant,

Стихотворение было написано незадолго до гибели поэта на дуэли в 1841-ом году, а опубликовано уже посмертно в 1843-ем году в журнале Oтечественные Записки.

A short analysis of Mikhail Lermontov’s poem Alone I go out on the road

The poem was written shortly before the death of the poet in a duel in 1841, and published posthumously in 1843 in the journal Notes of the Fatherland.

Тема стихотворения: одиночество, которое тяготит поэта ведь не с кем поделиться своими сокровенными мыслями и чувствами.

The theme of the poem: is loneliness which weighs on the poet. Indeed there is no one with whom to share his intimate thoughts and feelings.

Что касается композиции, то она простая, мысль развивается последовательно от первой строфы до пятой.

As concerns the composition, it is simple, and the idea develops consistently from the first stanza to the fifth.

Genre: philosophic lyrical poetry

Стихотворный размер: пятистопный хорей с анапестическими ходами

В стихотворении встречается такие литературные приёмы как эпитеты «кремнистый путь», «холодный сон», «тихий голос», инверсия «сиянье голубое», олицетворение «пустыня внемлет Богу», «звезда с звездой говорит», и оксиморон «светлая печаль» [Note: this phrase is not in this poem. The analyst may have confused this poem by Lermontov with one by Pushkin by that title.]

Poetic meter: pentameter trochee (metrical foot) with anapestic (two short syllables followed by a long syllable) moves

In the poem met are such literary devices as epithets “flinty path,” “cold sleep,” “silent voice;” inversions “shining blue;” personification “the desert listens to God,” “star talks with star;” an oxymoron “bright sadness.”
